Go to the ER or call 911

  • Swelling that spreads to your eye, neck, or under your tongue
  • Bleeding that will not stop
  • A serious injury to your head, face, or jaw
  • Fever together with facial swelling

What to do while you wait to be seen

A few simple steps can protect your tooth and ease the discomfort until you are in our chair.

Knocked-out tooth

Pick it up by the crown, not the root. Rinse it gently if it is dirty, then try to place it back in the socket, or keep it in milk. Call us right away, because time matters. Do not put a baby tooth back in.

Toothache

Rinse with warm water and gently floss to remove trapped food. Hold a cold compress against your cheek. Take an over-the-counter pain reliever as the label directs, and do not place aspirin on the gum.

Chipped or broken tooth

Rinse with warm water and save any pieces. Use a cold compress for swelling. If a sharp edge is cutting your cheek or tongue, cover it with dental wax or sugar-free gum.

Lost filling or crown

Keep the crown if you have it and bring it with you. Avoid chewing on that side. A pharmacy dental cement can protect the tooth for a short time. Never use household glue.

This is general first-aid guidance, not a diagnosis. Call us for advice about your situation.
