When wisdom teeth need to come out
Not every wisdom tooth has to be removed. We recommend extraction when a tooth is causing, or is likely to cause, a problem.
Pain or swelling
Soreness at the back of your jaw, or swollen gums around a wisdom tooth.
Impacted teeth
A tooth that is trapped under the gum or bone and cannot grow in properly.
Crowding
Wisdom teeth that push on neighboring teeth and can cause damage or shifting.
Decay or gum disease
Teeth at the back are hard to clean, so problems can start there.
In severe pain or have swelling?
We offer same-day emergency care. Call us instead of waiting.
What to expect
From your first visit to the day of the procedure, we explain each step in plain language.
1. Consultation and X-rays
Dr. Ahmad examines your mouth and takes X-rays to see where your wisdom teeth are and whether they should be removed.
2. Comfort and numbing
The area is numbed with local anesthetic. If you are nervous, ask about laughing gas sedation.
3. Removing the tooth
Your tooth is gently removed. Impacted teeth may need a small opening in the gum.
4. Aftercare
We give you written instructions for the first days at home, and you can call us with questions.
Recovery and aftercare
The first few days
- Rest, and hold a cold pack to your cheek to ease swelling
- Eat soft foods and drink plenty of fluids
- Avoid straws, smoking, and spitting hard, which can disturb the healing clot
- Rinse gently with warm salt water after the first day, as we advise
- Take pain relief exactly as directed
Call us if
- Pain gets worse after the first few days
- Bleeding does not slow down
- Swelling or fever increases
- You have a bad taste or foul smell from the area

Wisdom teeth questions, answered
Do wisdom teeth have to be removed?
Not always. Healthy wisdom teeth that have grown in fully and that you can clean well may not need to come out. We recommend removal when a tooth causes pain, infection, decay, crowding, or damage to nearby teeth.
Does wisdom teeth removal hurt?
The area is numbed, so you should not feel pain during the procedure, only some pressure. Soreness afterward is normal, and we give you instructions to manage it.
How long is recovery?
Many people feel better within a few days, and the gum takes longer to heal fully. We will tell you what to expect for your case.
Can I be sedated for wisdom teeth removal?
We offer laughing gas sedation for nervous patients.
What is dry socket?
Dry socket happens when the blood clot in the empty socket is lost, leaving the bone exposed and painful. Avoid straws, smoking, and hard spitting for the first few days, and call us if pain gets worse.
